I’m really excited about today’s post because my pages are being graced with the presence of lovely Sassy, the beautiful lady behind the incredible Assasynation photography. Based not far from me in the Cotswolds, her fabulous images have been featured across ALL of the top UK wedding blogs.
Not only did she very sweetly agree to be interviewed by me so you get a behind the lens lowdown on who Sassy is and how she became wedding royalty, but I also managed to twist her arm into giving my beautiful readers a fabulous special offer. Wait for it… she is offering a whopping £250 off Assassynation wedding photography for any couples getting married between now and the end of 2014. Just make sure you quote “Jessie Loves” and keep all your fingers and toes crossed that she’s still available!
Tell me a little bit about yourself…
My name’s Sassy (I know….it’s a bit unusual right!) and I am Assassynation photography. I love cats, cars and shooting weddings that are packed full of personality. I am based in the heart of the deepest, darkest Cotswolds and I live with my ever patient and lovely hubby and our 3 cats. I actually also have a soft spot for any animals (the weirder the better!!) and I am very fond of a dog inclusive wedding….love them!!
Tell me about Assassynation…
Assassynation was set up to provide couples with artistic but fun photography for their big day. I wanted to avoid the more traditional style and have worked hard to seek out the most fun weddings up and down the country. I have even been lucky enough to shoot some big days outside of the UK. I tend to specialise in weddings where the couple have put themselves in to it…..the ones where you can walk in the room and get a feel for their personality.
How long have you been in business?
I have been shooting weddings since 2009 and have shot over 130 weddings!!
How did you get involved in the industry?
I started out photographing my sister in law Vikki’s beautiful bespoke dresses (Liliia….seriously check her out!) and then quickly moved in to weddings. I decided to get in to weddings as to be honest I am a hopeless romantic and I like to take photo’s that matter!!
If you weren’t involved in your own business, what else would you like to do?
Oh man……that’s a toughie….is this a not based in reality/dream job scenario?? If so I would love to be a stunt driver or be involved in racing somehow….random I know but I would love that and there’s no way I could ever be a pop star…..my singing is terrible!!!
What or who inspires you?
I know this is going to sound cheesy and lame but genuinely my customers inspire me. They have the best, most creative weddings and I am so in awe of how they ignore the family pressures that you can get when the W word in mentioned and just go their own way. That and I’m totally inspired by people who just go after their dream….I love that!!
What do you love most about your job?
I love being a small part of my couples day, it’s one of the biggest days of their life and the fact that they put their faith in me to make sure it’s captured forever is always a huge compliment. I love it when my couples make one of my pictures from their wedding day their Facebook profile picture….nowadays that’s one of the biggest compliments someone can give you.
What makes your service unique?
I would say I make my service unique, I’m pretty unique…some would say special so I see the world in my own way. I have shot all sorts of unusual weddings and have loved them all, you’ll never feel like I ‘don’t get’ your vision for your big day, I love hearing all about your planning (even when your friends are sick of hearing about it) and when I turn up in the morning I am literally brimming over with excitement (the real stuff too….it’s quite sad how excited I get really…ha, ha, ha)
What’s your best memory from your job so far?
Oh my word there are so many to choose from!! There was the time I was stood on the rooftop on the Tides hotel in South Beach taking in the view before the first dance happened. Or how about the time that my husband and I were the only guests at a cave wedding (we even did a reading). Oh and the time I shot my photographer friends wedding by the side of a Loch in Scotland bawling my eyes out…ha, ha, ha softie!!
What’s the most unusual request you’ve ever had?
Hmmmm I get a few unusual request (no nothing like that! Get your mind out of the gutter!!) but I guess one of the most unusal ones was to be the legal witnesses and guests of honour for Caroline and Johnny’s cave wedding.
What’s your working week like?
Busy, seriously! Anyone who thinks we only work one day a week is sadly mistaken……if I’m not at weddings or travelling to weddings I’m editing, emailing and trying to keep my website up to date (sometimes I fail on the website front….I have a customers first rule and sometimes I run out of time…lol)
What made you want to work in the wedding industry?
I have to say that I never thought I would work in the wedding industry, I had a successful 13 year career in the motor trade but I fell in to it and once I had started shooting weddings I just loved it so much I couldn’t stop.
Have you seen many changes since you started your business?
I would say that the main changes have been how many amazing blogs there are out there to inspire people now……man how does anyone ever decide on what to do for their wedding these days!!
What’s the biggest misconception about your industry/service?
I would say the biggest misconception is that we are charging a fortune for one days work. Simply put it’s much more than a days work and actually, like most jobs the price reflects skill level.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to couples planning their wedding?
Be true to yourselves, don’t give in to pressure and of course make sure that you get the right photographer for you because after the cake has been eaten and the dress has got grubby the only things left are each other, your rings, the memories (but wait…..what do you mean you didn’t see everything that happened because you were super busy saying hello to everyone….oh and these are also not so easy to show the kids) and the photographs (these need to reflect your big day and show you the little things you missed!!)
Have you worked with any other vendors or suppliers that you’d recommend to couples getting married? And why?
I have worked with a whole host of fabulous suppliers that I would recommend. For dresses my two favourite ladies (they are creative geniuses) are Jo from the Couture Company and Vikki from Liliia, their work is to die for. If you haven’t heard of the Wedding Smashers and you don’t want a cheesy DJ check them out!! I loved them so much I booked them for a party I had! Oooh too many to list, if you need someone specific I am more than happy to send you recommendations…just ask!!
